Team Australia Training

Australia’s brightest surfing stars train (and shred) at URBNSURF Melbourne.
On Thursday, November 14th, we welcomed Team Australia, Surfing Australia and Surfing Victoria for a training day at URBNSURF Melbourne, Australia’s first surf park. Over the course of 10 hours in the lagoon, we saw some of the most high-octane performances since we first turned Roary on in mid-October.
Surfing Australia’s CEO and executive team, accompanied by Team Australia coach and Elite Program Manager Bede Durbidge and current world #4 Sally Fitzgibbons, arrived at dawn for two hours’ worth of empty barrels before the rest of the squad arrived. We hooted from the pier as the team tucked into slabs and tore sections apart, while The Today Show beamed live crosses of perfect waves rolling through at Melbourne Airport across the nation.
After the media formalities, those who missed out on the morning session were itching to get wet. When the OK was given, the surfers rushed to the water, and their coaches posted up on the lagoon walls to holler tips and advice between sets.
“Julian Wilson put in a mindblowing performance, stomping a full backside rotation on his very first wave (a Beast, no less). We saw him land varials, big spins, sit deep on the foamball and smoothly connect powerful turns. His coach Luke Egan and shaper Jason Stevenson acted as caddies, testing and refining a variety of performance craft with Julian throughout the day.”
Sally Fitzgibbons, together with two-time World Champion Tyler Wright and rising Victorian stars Sage Goldsbury and Ellie Harrison, were absolutely ripping. They charged The Beast and landed huge blowtails on our freshly-developed Giros III Pro and Giros V Pro settings, all the while sporting huge grins.
The juniors, led by 2019 Australian Junior Champion Dakoda Walters, barely left the water. Despite encouragement from Bede, Clancy Dawson and the other coaches for them to have lunch and take breaks, they refused to let perfect waves roll through unridden. Instead, cartons of water were gulped and snacks devoured in the lineup, thrown to them between rides.
Towards the end of the session, Taj Burrow, Mark Mathews, Luke Munro and Chris Hemsworth joined the pack, and surfed into the early evening under lights. News choppers hovered overhead as the four mates got thoroughly shacked, and sampled our full wave menu.
All in all, it was an incredible day of surfing in the most unlikely of locales – Tullamarine. We’re proud to support the development and progression of Australian surfing, and we’re stoked to help Australian surfers achieve their dreams of qualifying for the world tour, winning world titles, and earning Olympic gold.
